Hee Hee

Yesterday I asked Phoebe to move all my straight pins from my existing pin cushion to two new I had bought on etsy (aka the most dangerous site on the internet). Here's how she brought them to me:

Her precision and need for organization makes me smile a little bit.

Okay, it makes me smile alot!

Sometimes Dreams Really Do Come True

This right here is a dream come true.

My whole life long (or at least since I started to think about having my own children which seems like a really long time ago now), I dreamed of having a little girl. A little girl with a bob in a smocked bishop dress. I know. I have issues.

And not too many dreams really come true. Oh, they come true on some level, but there's always a side to it that you didn't imagine or couldn't foresee. There's always a little bitterness with the sweet and a little bad with the good. Nothing is ever all good or all bad.

But Sunday, my dream came true.

The best part? I bought the dress at a garage sale for $5. That's right. At a garage sale. For $5. I know you're jealous.

What dreams have come true for you?

Show and Tell: A Teacher Schultute

I didn't want to post two Show and Tell posts in a row, but I'm too busy getting back in the swing of things to think of a post.

I've made a shultute for my children's teachers since Eli started kindergarten two falls ago. I fill it up with all kinds of teacher survival necessities pictured below. The only thing not pictured are THESE because I almost forgot to put them in! Last year, I even had the great idea to use the school colors.

I hoping it seems like a nice gesture to make the first day of school go a little smoother for the teacher and less like a bribe. Not that I would ever do that or anything.

Show and Tell: Tiered Vintage Cake Plates

So my new favorite gift to make are THESE cake stands made from vintage plates and found candlesticks.

They are so cute and so easy and I think everyone should have one! Well, at least everyone I need to give a gift to. :)

I whipped this one up for my sis-in-law for her birthday.

I thought it would be cute for appetizers or cookie bars or mini cupcakes or jewelry!

See?!

I made this one for my good friend, MARIA, who came to visit this last weekend. (I totally meant to take pictures of our fun weekend at Amarillo's Largest Garage Sale and the fun we had in down in Canyon, but we were too busy having lots of fun to take pictures. Oops! That *always* seems to happen when we're together.) I found the candlesticks for $1 at the garage sale and the plates I've had for awhile. It was pretty darn cute, if I do say so myself!

First Day of Second Grade

If you're on Facebook, you know that yesterday was the first day of school in Texas.

If I saw one "first day of school" pic uploaded, I saw 100. Brand-spankin' new kindergarten photos and (my favorite) the mama who made her high school sophomore stand in front of the door for a first day photo. Precious. Every one.

So here's my post. Eli started second grade. (I know! Second Grade!) Despite his chipper smile, this boy was not so excited about the whole back to school business.

He doesn't love school and he'd much rather stay home and play with this lil' sidekick.

But off to school he has to go and I hope and pray it's a good year. Second grade is a lot harder than first with real homework (reading, math, and spelling every day!) and real grades. We're going to have our work cut out for us.

So we all decided to see him off to the First Day of School Pep Rally on the football field outside the school.

We were joined by the neighbor kiddos.

And I got in one last kiss before walking him to his classroom.

Where he sits in a big boy desk.

And Phoebe needed one last hug to get her through the day.

When I picked him up after school, he had lots of good things to say about his day. He got to organize his desk! The teacher lets them take their shoes off! She read them a chapter of Moby Dick! (At least I think it was Moby Dick. He said it was about a guy who was chasing a great white whale who had eaten his leg. Sounds like Moby Dick to me!) They got a long recess! They get to learn math facts!

I'm just hoping this enthusiasm lasts through next week, too.

Happy First Day, buddy! It's gonna be a great year!

It's Back To School Time

So that means no more sibling sleepovers...

No more pool time...

No more baseball in our pj's...

No more vacations to the beach...

No more Popsicles on the porch after an afternoon of Slip n' Sliding...

All good things must come to an end, I guess.

Show and Tell: A Re-Do

Awhile back, I wanted a bulletin board for my craft room. Somewhere to put up ideas and patterns and all the other papers that float around that room. Brad told me he had an old bulletin board in the attic and I had some vintage
old potato sacks that I hadn't used for anything. I thought it might make a neat bulletin board.

I was wrong.

The sacks were dusty and scratchy and harsh. It wasn't the look I wanted. Plus, after I hung it on the wall, it hung wonky. When Brad saw it, he said, "Yeah, now I remember that the board was out of whack."

Sigh.

So I lived with it a few months, but never really liked it. Then I had the bright idea to use the tablecloth from my first MENU BOARD as the bulletin board cover. I'm so glad I hadn't cut it.

It looks so much better. Not that you can tell from this photo.

Especially with the drawing of our family climbing a mountain that Phoebe drew. :)

Girls in a Creek

I only have a few more photos of our weekend at Family Camp to share. I think these are my favorites, though.

It's just a bunch of girls playing in a creek, but what I love their timelessness.

The relationship between bigger girls and little girls is transcendent.

Sure the world will always change, but this dynamic won't. There will always be some bigger girls who take younger girls under their own skinny wing.

Like a sister. Or a little mother.

It gives them both the chance to be better than they are. A friendship unlike any of a sibling or a peer, but one built on adoration going both ways.

And that's what I love about these photos. Take away the dress and these girls could live anywhere at anytime. The relationships are that universal.

And, yes, even boys will always be boys.

It's the magic of childhood, isn't it?

Family Camp 2011

Family Camp.

The words are more than a title. They are sentence about all that is good about family. The family you were born to and the family you find for yourself through Christ. Nestled in the mountains near Las Vegas, NM, it's a time for reconnection to the people and disconnection from the world.

A time for friends that sometimes seem like brothers.

A time for the friends you've known your whole life...

...but still enjoy you anyway.

A time for newer friends.

And a time to reconnect with your own little family.

And a time to enjoy the beauty of God's masterpiece in the unexplainable fun of a simple creek.

A time to visit with the friends you'd choose for sisters if you could...

...if for no other reason than you can see each other's beauty through the tired eyes and no make-up of camping out.

And a time to just hang out with those that God has given us for as community.

So while I may grouse about the rustic conditions of the cabins and the bathrooms and the fact that it always seems to fall on an inconvient weekend. I'm not sure I'd give it all up if given a choice.

The Easiest Ice Cream Pie Ever

Wednesday night we had a Cuddle Party.

And it's sooo not what you think. The group of students we lead Huddles for during their high school years graduated last May and left us for various colleges. They said when they came back we'd all have Cuddles together. Like College Huddles...Cuddles. Anyway, they're all headed back in the next few days so we had a little get together at the Taj McCall on Wednesday night.

And I use the term "party" rather loosely. Everybody brought their own food and then everybody headed outside to play a very loosey-goosey game of volleyball. It was loosey-goosey because they played off the house, there were Nerf guns involved, and they let Eli play. I figured that since I did absolutely no planning or preparing for this party, the least I could do was whip up this delicious-to-die-for-decadent dessert.

And did I mention it was easy?

The Easiest Ice Cream Pie Ever
19-24 regular sized ice cream sandwiches, unwrapped (The original recipe I found called for 19 ice cream sandwiches to cover a 9x13, but the store brand ones I used needed 24 to do the job. You just need enough to cover the pan twice.)
1 jar of hot fudge, warm enough to pour, but not to hot
1 jar caramel sauce
1 8oz. container Cool-Whip
chopped peanuts
chopped toffee bars or toffee baking bits

Working quickly, cover the bottom of a 9x13 inch cake pan with a layer of ice cream sandwiches. Pour fudge over the top. Add a layer of toffee bits and peanuts. Repeat the ice cream sandwich layer. Pour caramel over the top and spread Cool-Whip over that. Sprinkle with toffee bits and peanuts. Serve immediately or place in the freezer. If completely frozen, remove from freezer 20 minutes before serving.

Recipe adapted from TASTE OF HOME.

I didn't use peanuts last night because I burned through my third food processor (that's right, third) and didn't want to chop peanuts by hand. You know, because I'd already gone to so much trouble for this little party that I just couldn't be asked to chop peanuts. But I know they'd be yummy!

As one guy remarked, "I didn't know ice cream sandwiches could get any better!"

Ten on Ten: August 2011

It's TEN ON TEN time again!

The idea? Once a month on the tenth taking a photo an hour for ten consecutive hours to find much life and beauty among the ordinary things of our day! Some months are easier than others, and I have to admit, August was a tough one. There just didn't seem to be much beauty in my routine...or maybe I just failed to see it and appreciate it. Whatever. I had a pity party day and decided everyone else was a better mommy/quilter/photographer/everything than I was and I just couldn't shake the feeling. I had a bad attitude and I just couldn't shake it so my photos aren't all that inspired or beautiful. I've decided today will be a better day...we'll see how it goes.

So here's my ten on ten. Be sure to go HERE and see all the other awesome participants.
