Life On Hold

I feel like my life is on hold. Or “paused” as Eli would say. When we left Boston, we were so excited that they had told us to “live life.” We didn’t know that living life was impossible with cancer constantly looking over your shoulder at everything you do, playing a part in every decision you make, making itself a presence in every single day. It’s hard for our family to move on or look ahead because of the absolute uncertainty. Can you imagine your life with no future plans? Instead of purposefully making goals for our family we wait around for the next big, bad thing to happen or the next round of tests or the next doctor’s visit. Our calendar is empty after December…it’s about as far in advance as we feel like we can plan. Even thinking about Christmas is hard. I usually love all the planning, all the giving, all the family, all of it. It adds a new level of heartache to try to plan a holiday that your children will really remember because you don’t know how many you have. We have been told time and time again to “live for today.” It’s good advice. Really it is. But living only in today is kind of dreary and tiring. I know that each day is a gift and I have been blessed with each and every one that I get to spend with Brad and Eli and Phoebe. I just feel like it puts so much pressure on each day and I don’t have the energy to make every single day meaningful and rich and full for my children.

Maybe I’m just tired. I’m tired physically and emotionally and spiritually. I’m tired of the dishes and the laundry and the picking up. I’m tired of pretending everything is okay. I’m tired of feeling like everyday is wasted. I’m tired of waiting. I’m tired of being tired. I’m tired of wrestling with my faith everyday. I’m tired of seeing myself for who I really am and realizing that I am so far from the heart of God that I don’t know if I can spend eternity in a place where I feel like a stranger. I’m tired of missing my children’s childhood because I am so worn out that all I can do is lie in bed. I’m tired of feeling like my marriage is hollow because we are scared to talk about what might happen. I’m tired of the things that I truly enjoy being a burden because they interfere with what I think I should be doing. I’m tired of people telling me that I’m doing too much. I’m tired of secretly feeling like I am. I’m tired of aching muscles and a quesy stomach and irritated skin and swollen eyelids. I’m tired of feeling like I’m failing my children because Eli doesn’t know his letters and Phoebe never has any tummy time.

Maybe I should just take a cue from Eli and go to bed at 7:30. Gotta love those days when he doesn’t take a nap.

P.S. Regarding your last post... did Phoebe really not eat ANY of the chocolate cupcake? Not one bite? I need to bring her to my house for some training.

Hey little girl,
i am so sorry. This breaks my heart and deepens my love for you and Brad and Eli and Phoebe, but also deepens my dispair over being unable to help. All I know is that the monsters that used to hide in closet, now reside in our minds and in our hearts. Being tired is not a sin, being hopeless is not a sin, being afraid is not a sin. You are fighting this fight with courage and dignity, and that is all that is asked.
I wish I could hold you close and make the dark night go away, but you have found something your daddy simply can't do. i am sorry.
I love you, see you soon.

Jordan- what can one say to your blog??? First you should know that I have followed your blog for awhile- You, Brad, Eli, and Phoebe are in our prayers and I've asked others to pray for you as well. Never underestimate the power of prayer!!! I cannot empathize with you- only sympathize. I can say I've felt Satan's attack on our family though. I've struggled with my own faith and trust in the Lord during these tough times. I turned to the book of Job to be reminded that even he grew tired and weary and even questioned God. I only say this to let you know that what you're feeling is not wrong and I have to trust that God will prove faithful to you and your family and that you will be blessed! You really are doing an amazing job whether you feel like it or not!

My heart goes out to you as well as our prayers!

Dear Cousin,
Man..I hate this for you. I could spend a paragraph writing how you will be in our prayer life, quote scriptures and tell you God is with you each step...all that is true and appropriate, but sometimes you have to look at a situation and say, "This sucks!". I know, my ACU legacy would not be proud of the word..(for all of those offended, please insert "Stinks"..no, actually, stay with "Sucks").
Jordan, I cannot begin to immagine the anger, dispair, hopelessness, etc that you and Brad and all are feeling. As a distant connection, I am angry and frustrated as well. I hate that anyone, especially a close and loving family member would ever go through something like this. I do not understand the "ins and outs" of life or why spcific things plague us at different times.
The only thing I do know is that God is in control. For better or worse on the earthly side, the creator of the universe, the Almighty and Most powerful knows your pain, feels your pain and is with you every step. That is so hard to grasp and does not always translate to "sunshine".
I pray that you are encouraged by your loved ones and friends. I pray that the Lord bless you with wisdom, peace and understanding. I pray for joy in dark times...but most of all, I pray that you feel at ease and at peace to scream, cry, and shake a fist on days like this. I believe it is a misconception that you must always have a stiff upper lip in times of pain. Through Abraham, the Israelites, David, Daniel, Jesus,Paul, etc....all rejoiced but all prayed and pleaded with the Lord in times of sorrow and expressed their fear, anger and hopelessness.
Ms. Jordan, we love you dearly...crying out is an appropriate and justified emotion...so gargle some salt water, put on the boxing gloves, and let her rip. You deserve a good scream/cry. Trust me, our throats are tired and our eyes are swollen from our own participation in this activity for you.
May the Lord Bless you and keep you.
Mac

My heart aches for you! The one thing I truly admire about you is that you have the perseverance to keep going. To do all the things you do with a smile. That inspires me to step it up! I love you and pray for you daily!

Jordan-
You don't know me... I found your blog through a link on a friend's blog-- a young mom like yourself that is also struggling through life with cancer.
I just wanted to let you know that Christians in southern California who don't even know you are praying for you! I have never read such a raw, unfiltered account of the feelings/emotions that someone in your position feels. Thank you for giving us a peek at what it's like to live "Life on Hold." I will continue to pray for you and your family. Isaiah 40:29-31--> He WILL renew your strength.
Oh, and just so you know, my toddler doesn't know her letters and my little one doesn't get enough tummy time either. :)

Jordan,

I've gone through some tough and difficult times myself and I learned to just put my life in God's hands and my body on his alter every single day. I pray for you and your family daily. God Bless You.

Jordan,
Was it John Lennon that sang, "Life is what happens to you when you're busy making other plans"??? You don't have to make every day "meaningful and rich" - it will happen on its own: the chocolate messes Phoebe makes, Eli dressing himself, saving a kitten... Oh, and remember - you have to have a bad day to have a good day.

I do not know you- I am sorry if this is rude jump in, but I believe that God led me here and I just wanted you to know that my prayer group will be praying for you and your precious family. Your blog has touched my heart, and I know that God hears your cries. May the Holy Spirit intervene here and heal you of this cancer. We will be on our knees in prayer and I want you to do the same. There is power in knowing, KNOWING that God can do anything and He is bigger than ANYTHING. He will fight for you when you are weak so surround yourself with those that Love the Lord. God bless you and restore you wholy.

Jordan,
Nancy and I love you guys so much. We certainly are not the only ones, as evidenced by the 45,000+ visitors to your blog page. Mac has it right...no one should have to suffer like you and your family are. I remember the night you and Brad came to our house for dinner and you told us of your past history with cancer. We were amazed by your strength and by God's grace as He brought you through that time.
You and Brad (and kids) are certainly a blessing to so many. Let those who love you much be a blessing of encouragement to you.
Our prayer for you is that the demon of guilt will be slain, that you will have the strength to enjoy your family, that you will once again find comfort in God's embrace, and most of all that God will cleanse you of this disease.

We do love you and continue to pray for you.

Jordan,

I've been watching that new Ken Burn's documentary "The War" on TV. They had several WWII veterans relating these horrendous stories of some of the things they endured during battle.

Your words here remind me of theirs: I hear the same utter weariness, wounded resolve, and yet also this extraordinary strength of character, and -- against all odds -- even faith.

Both you and they have endured things in your respective battles that most of us will never experience.

They saved the free world.

Jordan, I believe God is using your words to save your fellow Believers from self-deception, and worse. Your fierce honesty and beautiful spirit touch our hearts and inspire us to be "real", too.

Like your Dad, we can't fight this fight for you. But me and Julie are just outside the ropes, praying for you, and hollering "Go the distance, Jordan, go the distance!!"

Jordan,
I heard about your blog through mutual friends (many sources!). One cancer survivor to another -- I don't have to tell you how God gives us strength and peace and the enemy tries to steal it at every turn. However, I hear victory in each of your posts despite the circumstances. Your blog and story has touched me and has been a source of spiritual renewal for me. Hearing your honesty and faith has reminded me that God is truly at the center of it all. After my battle, God blessed me beyond belief. I pray your blessings are received sooner than later. You have a friend up the road (Lubbock) who is praying for you. May you feel God's strength today.

Jordan,

I don't know you in the flesh, but I feel I know you in spirit. My husband, Dan has cancer. He was diagnosed in 2002. We, too, take life one day at time. The most encouraging words for me came from Dan himself. He said, "I feel like little David going out to face Goliath everyday. I know that this battle is not mine, it it the Lord's and it has already been WON." So, to you Jordan, I would say, YOU ARE A WINNER and YOUR FAMILY IS BLESSED TO HAVE YOU!

Love,
Dorothy
