The Great Sippy Cup Debate

I was a waaaaayy better parent before I had children.

I think about this often. Like when I see my almost five-year-old Phoebe using sippy cups.

Here's the deal. Phoebe is a klutz. There's just no way around it. She falls down our stairs once a week. She falls out of her chair at the dinner table for no reason. She often trips while walking around. And heaven help us if we ever give her a cup without a tight lid. Hence the reason she still uses sippy cups. It's easier to do that then clean up a spill at every. single. mealtime.

In all the years I taught Pre-K (three years full-time before I had Eli and five years years at our little church preschool), I had several 4-and-newly-five-year-olds whose mommies sent them to school with sippy cups. I remember thinking, "Really? A sippy cup? This child is almost ready for kindergarten."

What's that proverb? "Pride goes before the fall." I think it should read, "Judgment goes before the fall...especially when it comes to parenting," because all the I'll-Nevers and My-Child-Won'ts come back to haunt you in a big way.

Here's where I need some advice. Any other moms out there with klutzy kids who are too lazy to clean up a spill at every meal? What are some good alternatives to sippy cups? I'm not a huge fan of the water bottle because they are pretty cumbersome. I've found one kid-sized up like THIS, and I love it, but I can't find any more. Not even at Target, who I felt sure would help a gal out.

Sometime I'll tell you all the other ways I was a better mom before I had kids. It's a long list, to be sure.

I saw some cups like the one you linked at Hobby Lobby. They were cute lime green and pink with a letter on it. Good Luck! On another note...I totally regret saying "My child will never___" Turns out that all those things I put in the blank at least one of my 3 children does!

I don't have any tips about the cup because Lincoln seems to following in his big cousin's footsteps. He may go to kindergarten with a sippy cup too. Heck, he might go to kindergarten in diapers since he is one of the last in his class to not be potty trained.
I am agree with " I was a better parent before I had any." I told someone that yesterday. It makes me laugh inside when people (without kids) say "I would never do...."
Plus, sippy cups are way more fun with princesses than adult cups!

I still give both my kiddos a lidded cup occassionally. I found a couple of great water bottle type cups at Walgreens. I don't let Sabine have an open cup unless she is sitting down at the table. She still has a sippy cup of water next to her bed at night also (she's one of those kids who never seems to drink enough during the day!). We also have a big dog with a big tail. She is very prone to knocking things of the coffee table with her tail. Lids are a great way to prevent that. It's much easier to clean the spills up on the hardwood that carpet! I'm sure you and Phoebe will get things worked out. Until then, don't be so hard on yourself!!

Bed, Bath & Beyond has cups like that. Jack enjoys using the stainless type thermos water bottles. He has a few from the Disney store. Our problem is Jacey wants to do everything Jack does so it's just easier to give him a sippy cup rather than mess with Jacey having a regular cup. He doesn't complain so I don't worry. He still get's a regular cup at dinner but for just drinking water during the day I'll use a sippy cup or the stainless thermos.

Noah and Emma Kate do regular plastic cups (small ones) at dinner sometimes, but NEVER in the living room. I'm sure we will be using a sippy cup forever as long as we are in the "carpeted areas" in my house.

Tervis tumblers are great! They come in lots of sizes with optional lids. They are sold at Bed, Bath & Beyond in cute patterns, but you can also order them online with names or initials. Our family lives them!

Good luck!

You can buy small plastic cups at restaurant supply stores, and buy disposable lids to fit them. I also have a friend who buys the styrofoam cups at SAMs and gets the lids to fit them. I think the same lids fit both of the ones I'm thinking about.

I am already eating my words about pacies. I swore my little one wouldn't have a pacie past 9 months. Well she's almost 13 months and we are not even trying to get rid of it. Ha. I have some friends with older kids that use the sippy cups that are like sports bottles. They seem to work well for them. Any suggestions on good bottle transition sippy cups? We've tried the nuby and recently and tommy tippie (sp?). We are using them but she's not happy about them and doesn't drink much.

I always save the plastic kids cups with lids that they got at restaurants. Stick a straw in and you're done. I know they aren't pretty but it worked for us!

Try Old Navy - they had some cups like the ones you cited, only kid-sized, and reasonably priced!

I too have seen tervis cups at Bed Bath & Beyond. They are nice but I like throw aways! My cup of choice for preK kids is the 8 ounce paper coffee cups and lids you get at Sam's Club. Because its a coffee cup its great for cold drinks or hot chocolate or hot cider. They feel so grown up drinking out of a coffee cup and its less likely to spill than an open cup.
